2014 GC Premium Riesling

The 2014 GCV Premium Riesling comes from the oldest block of Riesling vines on the vineyard. Our aim is to make something that is more textural than the Celtic Farm, not relying totally on acidity to give length and drive to the wine.

Overview

This premium riesling is nothing short of world class. Unmistakable citrus, salinity and even a slight chalkiness characterise the palate. The acidity is great, but supremely well balanced.

Tasting Notes

Pale green in appearance with typical Clare Valley Riesling characters of lemon, lime and apple with some floral honeysuckle aspects on display along with a little mineral flintiness. The palate is fresh, crisp and dry; the concentrated flavours and balanced acidity ensuring a long, textural finish. Try with Gruyere cheese.

Vintage Notes

Growing Season

The 2014 vintage was shaped by a cool winter with average rainfall followed by a dry and quite warm spring. Budburst was a touch earlier than normal due to the warmer conditions – maybe a week earlier than what is considered average. Summer was very warm to very hot. January was particularly hot at times - only broken up by a week of cooler weather in the third week. Thankfully the heat dissipated mid February and the fruit was able to ripen in the cooler months of March & April.

Winemaking

The grapes for this wine were both hand & machine harvested, transported to the winery, de stemmed, pressed and the juice chilled prior to the being partially clarified by cold settling – some solids were retained for texture and added complexity. It was then inoculated with a pure yeast culture, with fermentation carried out in stainless steel temperature controlled tanks for 25-30 days. After fermentation the wine was fined, stabilised and then filtered prior to bottling.
